Alexander Roy "Sandy" Mahon

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander Roy "Sandy" Mahon, who passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026, at the age of 75 in Regina, Saskatchewan.  Born on July 30, 1950 in Wakefield, Quebec, Sandy lived a life defined by service, integrity, and unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his country.

Sandy was predeceased by his parents Catherine and Harold Mahon, his sister Helen Mahon, and by his first son, Ian Mahon, whose memory remained forever close to his heart.

Sandy is survived by his beloved wife, Katherine Kushniruk; his first wife, and mother of his two sons, Jeanne Balfour; his son, Eric Mahon, and daughter-in-law, Lindsay Mahon; and his cherished grandsons, Liam, Lachlan, and Hendric, who brought him immense pride and happiness.

At just 19 years of age, Sandy left Kitimat, British Columbia, and made the long drive to Regina, Saskatchewan, to begin training as a recruit with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. That journey marked the beginning of an exceptional career that would span 35 years. Throughout his distinguished service with the RCMP, Sandy earned the respect of fellow officers and the communities he served through his professionalism, compassion, and steadfast commitment to justice. He rose through the ranks to retire as Sergeant Major, a testament to his leadership, dedication, and the esteem in which he was held by his colleagues.

Retirement from the RCMP did not signal the end of Sandy's commitment to serving others. He accepted the role of Registrar of the Funeral and Cremation Services Council of Saskatchewan, where he continued to provide leadership, guidance, and support to the funeral profession throughout the province. He remained in that position until his full retirement at the end of 2021, once again leaving behind a legacy of integrity, professionalism, and public service.

With retirement came the opportunity to devote more time to the simple pleasures that brought him joy. Sandy found great satisfaction tending to his garden, carefully cultivating flowers and vegetables with the same patience and attention to detail that defined his career. He was an avid stamp collector who appreciated the history and stories behind every piece.   

Above all else, Sandy's greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose quiet strength, wisdom, and unwavering support were constants in the lives of those who loved him. He believed in leading by example, working hard, and treating every person with kindness and respect. His gentle sense of humour, thoughtful advice, and dependable presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Sandy will be lovingly remembered by his family, friends, neighbours, former RCMP colleagues, members of the funeral profession, and the many people whose lives he touched throughout his lifetime of service. His legacy is one of honour, humility, and compassion—a life lived with purpose and dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of others.

A private close friend and family service will be held on Saturday, September 19th, 2026, at the RCMP Chapel and Cemetery in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Family, friends, former colleagues, and all whose lives were touched by Sandy are warmly invited to attend a Celebration of Life at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19th, 2026, at the RCMP Heritage Centre, where stories, memories, and laughter will be shared in honour of a life exceptionally well lived.  Please RSVP to; SandyMahonCOL@gmail.com to confirm if you will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages those wishing to honour Sandy's memory to spend time with those they love, lend a helping hand to someone in need, or make a donation to a charity supporting first responders or their local community.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to everyone who has offered their love, prayers, and support during this difficult time.  The family also would like to highlight the wonderful care and support that Sandy received at the Regina Urgent Care facility, the Regina General Hospital, and at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre.

Though he has left this world, Sandy's example of service, integrity, and quiet strength will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
