Satya Paul Madiratta

It is with overwhelming sadness that the family of Satya Paul Madiratta announces his passing at the age of 93 on July 17, 2026. As a longtime educator, he was known to many as “Mr. Madiratta”, but to us, he was just “Papa”.

Papa was born to Kashi Ram and Guru Devi Madiratta in Lahore, India. He and his 8 siblings shared humble beginnings. Even days before he passed, Papa smiled as he recounted stories of a childhood spent running barefoot, swimming in the creek, and sleeping under the stars.

Papa was 25 years old when he met and married his best friend, Sharda, in 1958. A year later, they welcomed their only child, Nitin. Mama and Papa both worked as teachers to support their family. At the same time, Papa earned master's degrees in education and mathematics.

In the late 1960s, the family immigrated to Canada where Papa continued his career as a teacher in Kayville, Arthur, and Lake Lenore before settling in Weekes, SK. Papa worked as the Vice Principal at Weekes School until his retirement in 1989. Papa loved his time in Weekes. He could often be found at the Golden Age Club, shooting pool and playing cribbage with neighbours who became lifelong friends.

In the 1990s, Mama and Papa moved to Saskatoon to be closer to Nitin and his two children, Naval and Monique. Mama and Papa loved being grandparents, treating their grandchildren like their own. As much as Papa loved his kids, there was no denying that his priority was always his wife. After decades spent working, traveling, and raising a family together, Papa was determined to care for Mama himself when she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2016. Papa learned how to cook and clean for her in his 80s and waited on her hand and foot until her passing in 2019.

Papa was highly intelligent and loved learning about new technology. He even taught himself to write software code on a whim and was never seen without his Air Pods and smart watch. He loved long walks and kept a close eye on his step count. Papa maintained his independence as he aged but eventually agreed to move to Regina earlier this year to live with Naval and Naval’s wife, Jessica. Naval and Jessica hoped to enjoy Papa’s company for many more years but are grateful for the time they shared together.

Waiting for Papa on the other side were his beloved wife of 61 years, Sharda; parents Kashi Ram and Guru Devi; and his siblings Ashcharya Lal (Shanti Devi), Inder Ram (Sudershna), Harbans Lal (Karma Vali), Amar Nath, Dharam Veer (Santa Rani), Indra Rani (Arjun Dev), Raj Rani (Gyan Chand), Santosh Kumari (Tilak Raj).

Left to cherish Papa’s memory are his son, Nitin (Carol); grandchildren Naval (Jessica) and Monique (Brian); his sister-in-law, Raj Kumari; and countless nieces and nephews.
