I just found out today about the passing of Brad. Brad and I met a couple years ago over our shared passion of audio equipment. Brad and I made many transactions back and forth and he was always willing to go the extra mile to make sure everyone was happy. I will miss Brad and our chats and quests to audio perfection. Brad was such a kind and caring man. Sending my condolences to the family.

There are no words that can convey the sadness in my heart for you, Dianna and the kids on Donavon’s passing. I prayed and prayed that he might come through this, it is hard to understand God‘s will in times like this. There are friends who are friends and then they’re friends who are like family and family is what you have always been. From those early days in Weyburn and all these years later, even though we didn’t see you often I always loved catching up through your letters and so happy to have seen you both at the store, even though a while back, Donavon was the brightest light, and his laugh is not one to ever be forgotten. His zest for life was immeasurable, and he lived it fully.. You Dianna and the kids and now Teddy were his world and such a beautiful testament to the life you built together. I am keeping you all close and thought in prayer. May the Holy Spirit wrap you in comfort and bring peace to your hearts in this unimaginable time of grief and sorrow. Well, done, good and faithful servant, well done. May Donavon rest eternal 🙏 Love you all.😢❤️‍🩹

Only on a few occasions did I meet Mr. Nelson, but they were always special. I never saw him alone; he always came around with a hearty entourage of family, as many as could fit aboard our party boat, where his son Julian and I would host them. It was then that I saw what others have described so clearly: energy, enthusiasm, love for family and the community that surrounded them, pride in his son. When I learned of his passing, I was on the boat, and I looked across the deck and remembered like it was just yesterday how he was dancing and cheering and celebrating, as much one of the boys as he was their proud father. At one time I was passing through Kelowna while he and Julian were staying at their cabin and they welcomed me to visit and stay the night like I was family. I remember sitting around the table talking about our lives and him remarking on what a difference he could see in Julian before and after major milestones; university, moving to Vancouver, pursuing a career of passion... It was such an example of the kind of love that I would like to someday show my own children: fully attentive and engaged, but so respectful and trusting with no intent or even desire to interfere, admiration from both close and afar. While discussing what makes us such great friends, I once told Julian that I feel we click on a mutually respectful level, such that we can realize our full potential both separately and together. I see that generous and humble love flow from Mr. Nelson through Julian, and every day that I am Julian's friend I will remember his father by it.

For many years, Ven was part of my extended family. Like a brother from another mother, he was a welcome guest at birthdays and other holiday celebrations, and at the family cottage. Ven and my mother, Pat Krause, shared a love for a good story. There was never a shortage of literary issues to discuss when those two got going. My time as a graduate student in creative writing at Warren Wilson overlapped with Ven’s, with Ven completing his degree a year after I finished mine. We shared many friends in that vibrant community. Our friendship continued for some years following but then, as sometimes happens, we went in different directions. Life events, large and small, intervened. I played no role in Ven’s life in his later years. Happily, he had built a nurturing community to provide him with the care and support he needed. Ven had an outsized literary imagination, grit and determination, a keen interest in helping others develop their writing skills, and a fondness for dark chocolate. He will be missed by many for a long time.
